I heard a lot of cat and dog food are being recalled. I feed my cat Special Kitty Indoor formula dry food. Is my cat at risk? He seems just fine.

Is all dry cat food bad for cats?

This is what I am beginning to believe. I have looked at several sources of information for this (some right here at Yahoo Answers) and it looks like dry food is essentially unhealthy for your cat. My cat is quite possibly diabetic, and it really looks like he should not have any dry food, and that includes the dry food made specifically for diabetic cats.

Now, I have seen cats live a long time eating only dry food. But maybe they would have been even healthier and had greater longevity without it.

What do you think?
This is a very interesting and very inportant issue for cats and the people who love them. From the little research that I have done, it seems to me that there would be benefits to an all wet food diet which is very high in protein and very low in carbs. Perhaps a good clue to what cats need is found when looking at what wild cats eat (in the wild).

I can accept that maybe some cats do fine on dry food for whatever reason. But I have a hard time accepting that dry food is actually BETTER than wet food. I wonder if folks who believe this think that a diebetic cat should still eat well formulated dry food instead of all wet food?

I am in the process of getting treatment for my cat who likely has diabetes, though this has not yet been confirmed. And therefore I am looking at all info available.

Thanks for all the answers here. It is clear that there are some people here who are very knowledgable about these matters, and who truly love cats.

For more of our videos, please visit us at www.stevehasballs.com Commercial cat food Most store-bought cat food comes in either dry form, also known as kibble, or wet canned form. Some manufacturers sell frozen raw diets and premix products to cater to owners who feed raw. Major brand-name dry cat food manufacturers often use primarily grain-based ingredients like corn and rice with meat by-products or animal digest making up the meat ingredients. Some manufacturers offer 'premium', 'natural' or 'holistic' formulas that are by-product free and contains less or no grains. Grain-free dry diets still contain carbohydrates, from sources such as potato or tapioca as the starch in those ingredients is needed to allow the kibble to hold its shape. Cats have no metabolic need for carbohydrates as the feline system prefers to create glucose from protein.

I have heard that dry cat food is bad for your cats health. My cat loves dry cat food and only eats a small amount of the wet cat food. I used to give her dry food in the mornings but now I have started to give her wet cat food as that would be the time when she is the most hungry. This morning she woke me up meowing becuase she was hungry and I fed her one of those small tins of cat food and she only ate half. An hour later she still didn't finish it. I gave her a small pile of dry cat food and she ran straight over and ate it. I don't think it is enough food for her to be eating only one small tin of cat food a day (half in the morning, half at night). She is already small and although her weight is okay, she really doesn't need to be any thinner.

What about commercial dog food?

I'm going to answer my own question what I think. I think it is terrible. After my 4 year old stitzu had her operation (2 weeks ago) from stones in bladder, i asked the dr. what caused this. he said something in dog food. That's when I spent hours and hours on internet. What I found out was terrible. By products is noting but dead animals. All the dead animals that are not good for human consumption go to rendering plants and are rendered into our dog food and cat food. What else goes in it. used cooking oil from restaurants. Yes! Used cooking oil or fry-o-later grease. It is legal too. I could not believe it!. Well now, I have ordered holistic dog food with antioxidants and vitamins and chicken, real chicken with no steroids or any junk in it. I will let you all know how well she does on Life's Abundance dog food. Gigi is on prescription for bacterial infection in bladder. Still has 2 more weeks on it. I'll keep in tough with you all. K?

The vet put my cat on a special RX cat food, for her kidney problems. She doesn't seem to like it as much as her regular over the counter food, but that has TOO MUCH protein and sodium. She's an OLD cat...and so she's gonna be picky. I wondered if I could mix a little dried cat food, formulated either for Urinary health or "Senior" formula in her wet food for her kidneys, so she'll eat it.

Thanks!

BTW, the vet RXed her Purina NF canned cat food.
She didn't have kidney failure, just a bad kidney infection, in which she had to be put on fluids for....
