Help on a Kitten food? Nutro or Natural Balance?

My husband and I just adopted a kitten from a shelter.... they had her on friskies dry food, which I know is not a good food for her. I was told by a woman at our local Petco to put her on Nutro Max kitten formula, but I was also looking into Dick Van Patten's Natural balance cat food (which can be given to a kitten watered down). Can anyone recommend what would be better? Our dog is currently on Natural Balance allergy free dog formula (he has skin allergies), and does wonderful. Thanks for any info! Oh, if you could also recommend a good wet food to mix in that would be great help!

What's the best cat food…here are my problems.?

I have two indoor-only male cats around 3 years old. They are normal weight. They both have problems with hairballs and dandruff and I have been trying to feed them the best kind of food for cats. They get Wellness Core (grain free) dry food that we free-feed. And then at night they get a pouch of Wellness wet food (I also add water to make a gravy for them to make sure they are getting enough H2O). They don't love either of those foods, but they will tolerate it. (Sometimes the wet food is left in the bowl)

They do not like any pate food, so I won't be able to go with anything that isn't in a pouch. We have tried getting grass to help with the hairballs and they don't seem to know that they are supposed to eat it. I have also tried vasaline on their paws and it didn't seem to do much. I brush them several times a week, but they freak if I try to bathe them. I have been adding fish oil to the wet food, but it doesn't seem to be helping the dandruff much.

The thing is...they used to get Iams Indoor Hairball dry food and Friskies pouches (that they loved). And we didn't seem to have as many problems with dandruff and hairballs...of course maybe the winter weather has more to do with it than the food?

I know Iams/Friskies has bad stuff like wheat gluten, chicken meal or by-products in them, so I'd like to stay away from them, but if they don't like the "good food" what is a mommy to do?

I know some of you are experts on cat food and what works best. Please let me know what you think I should do to help them...poor Felix puked up a huge hairball the other night and didn't even feel well enough to eat his supper it. Thanks in advance for your advice.

one of my cats has FLUTD. my vet told me (and has repeatedly told me) that the only food they recommend feeding him at all is Hills PRESCRIPTION (not science) Diet Feline c/d dry food, which can only be purchased at a veterinary clinic, because it lowers the pH of his urine because of its low magnesium.

I've read elsewhere and have been told by other people (not veterinarians though) many different things including:

1. that dry food contributes to the problem by removing hydration from the cats sytem?
2. that Hills Prescription Diet contains mostly grains?
3. that removing magnesium from foods is not the best solution, as cats may need some magnesium?

my concern is that if any of the things people are telling me are correct, and I'm buying food vets get paid to sell, I could be shortening his lifespan when my intention is to keep him alive and happy as long as possible.

he's eaten Prescription c/d for at least 4 years and has had no health problems while on it, after almost dying from crystal blockage and barely avoiding kidney damage from eating Purina Cat Chow (not saying Purina is dangerous, my cat has a disease). I got him to resume drinking water by buying a cat fountain because he was afraid to drink, and it took a week to get him to eat the Prescription c/d for the first time. but 4 years now.

a pet shop owner gave me samples of a few different products (but she also told me to continue buying Hills Prescription Feline c/d as she thinks it helps), some of the products being: dry Taste Of The Wild feline formula, dry Felidae, wet Wellness Healthy Indulgence packets (she had no dry Wellness). she also told me what others have: that moisure/water is the best because it can prevent the crystals from forming and the infections from coming back. she said cats are desert animals and naturally resist water, so wet food is best.

so far my plan is: continue feeding Hills Prescription c/d, buy Wellness wet Healthy Indulgence packets to give him more liquids.

anyone have any experience with this situation? what do you feed your cat, and how long has it worked?

My 4 week old kitten is eating dry cat food. Isn't that a little young? Is it safe?
Geez Ken S, do you have a degree in cat food!
Troubles: Thanks for the advise. I do appreciate it. The kitten is with the momma cat, but just started helping herself to momma cat's food. She's still nursing too.

I feed my cats Nutro Natural Choice dry food, which is supposed to be good stuff. However, they are always hungry. When it comes time to feed them they go crazy, because they are so starving. I feed them twice a day. Does this sound right? Does anyone else have a similiar experience on this brand of food?

Chicken or Tuna dry cat food?

Trying to pick a good cat food. He likes Tuna/Salmon flavored cat food the best. Chicken he ate before but with a dish side by side he chose the Tuna/Salmon for 1-2 days. Does it matter what kind I give him? Some say fish type products are bad for cats?

Wal-Mart Cat food?

I buy my cat Special Kitty dry food, which apparently is not part of the recall. It is now April 15th, and my cat is a little low on food and I am going to purchase a new bag of Special Kitty. If I buy this bag on say April 20th, was this food made before or after the recall. In other words, when you buy a bag of cat food from Wal-Mart, when was it made? A month ago, a week ago, 3 months ago, what?

see it has selenium and manganese. I know selenium is poison.
Figure the selenium is making cat's hair fall out - right?

I'm seeing reactions in my cat with the cat food she's on. I feed her Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul Light. I had tried other stuff before that. She scratches behind her ears a lot more. There's some hair loss on the back of one of her legs, though this might be from chewing or over grooming and not just straight hair loss, I'm not sure. I'm bringing her to the vet in a few days to see what specifically she's allergic too but I want to get an idea for what are the best grain free foods out there. I know of Natural Balance but that's it. I'd like to know ones that are good and that can be gotten fairly easily. Also, are there wet cat foods that are grain free? She's about 2-3 years old and a low active cat.

The only one I could find so far is California Natural Chicken and Brown Rice formula. I'll probably end up going with this one, but I wanted to see if anyone knew of other brands that do not contain fish.

Thanks.
Peas and Duck sounds like a good option. The vet believes she has allergies to some common foods (fish being one of them). It's possibly that she has a problem with chicken too, so it might be a good idea to try something she's never had before... like duck.
Thanks for the suggestion! :)
GoGreenGirl - My cat won't eat anything but dry, she refuses it. I've tried cooking healthy food for her in the past and she looked at her bowl, then at me, growled and ran and hid. It's gotta be dry (she hates moist cat food too) and the reason she can't have fish is because the vet is pretty confident that she is allergic to fish.

What's a good dry cat food that cats enjoy?

We have 2 male cats, one is about 5 the other around 8 years old. The older cat is getting really picky and losing weight too. He will eat canned food, which we give them at night.
He will be going to the vet next week for shots and a check up. I'm considering giving him wet food twice a day, based on some of the answers I've seen.

The younger cat has been gaining weight so we may just switch to an all canned diet 1/2 a can every 12 hours... for each cat.

3 of my cats will eat wet food, my other female only eats dry. I heard its good to at least give them a little wet. I have some receipes that include chicken, carrots, etc. I just don't want my little ones to get spoiled. Maybe for a special dinner once in awhile. Thanks fellow cat-lovers. Oh, i've tryed so many wet store brand foods to the most expensive Roxy will not eat it.
