Can You Recommend a Good Dry Cat Food?

Can you recommend a good cheap cat food

I constantly try to give our kittens the best cat food possible, but at the moment I need to save money where I can. Does anybody know if the chepaer brands of cat food are any good.

I know that dogs thrive on dry food, but I do not know if it is alright to give my kittens dry cat food, and whether it would harm their growth and development. I guess a cheaper brand of dry cat food would be what I would choose if it is OK and if anybody can recommend anything from theor own experience.

Can anyone give me advice for my sick cat?

My 3 year-old cat Ripley stopped eating and drinking 4 days ago. Yesterday I took her to the vet and the vet did some x-rays. The x-rays were all good so she just suggested we try to feed her some tuna, chicken, ham or turkey. When I got home I tried everything she suggested but still Ripley refused to eat.

After a couple of hours with no luck, I went to Petsmart to ask for advice. The person I talked to suggested to try different cat food (Ripley has been eating the same food for the past 2 years). I bought several kinds of dry cat food, canned cat food and even a box of cat milk. I started off with giving Ripley the new dry food. She immediately started eating it and has been eating pretty good ever since and hasn't had any problems with throwing up or diarrhea. I read that Nutri-Cal is great for situations like this, so I just bought some. I will give it to her the next time I give her water.

As for the water part, I'm still struggling with that. She still refuses to drink water, so I have to use a syringe to give her water. I give her between 1-3 teaspoons of water every 1-2 hours. She just went pee and it was normal and alot. Am I giving her the right amount of water and at correct intervals? Also do you have any advice on what I can do to get her to drink water by herself.
Ripley was sick. She was extreamly weak and couldn't even stand before we got her to eat. She wasn't acting like herself at all. Ripley and my other cat only eats dry food. We got them as kittens and we have tried giving them canned food but they both turn their noses up at it.
We use metal cat drinking bowls for our cats and they have never had a problem with them. Ripley doesn't drink from sinks, fausets or toilets (our other cat does). Thank's for telling me that 3 teaspoons more then 2 times a day is too much. I wanted to make sure she wouldn't get dehydrated. I will ask her vet about how much water, if any, we should give her.

I went to see my vet this morning and I asked him, just to clearify, that canned food is better for cats than dry food.
He said NO, that dry food is better because it cleans there teeth and that canned food has 75% water so they arent getting much nutrients...
I feed my cat Innova EVO, the canned and dry... and from all the research I've done and questions I've asked on yahoo, the majority says canned food is much better for cats...
I'm confused, is he just misinformed? I hate to think my cats vet doesnt know whats good for a cat...
Or is the research I've googles misinforming about whats best for cats healths?

cat food allergy issue – fish?

Ok, so my part Siamese male cat, Harvey, has developed an allergy to fish. I had been feeding him Innova canned cat food, which has chicken and herring in it. For some time, he thrived on it, his coat getting unbelievably soft, and his energy level being excellent. Then in the last few weeks he has been unenthusiastic about that food, preferring other brands that I rotate with it. All winter he scratched at one ear, and I thought it was just winter dry skin, but with winter over, he continued to scratch. So, off to the vet we go. It's been a few days since he had any of the Innova to eat, and his ear is less itchy, and not so irritated-looking. Vet draws blood, one of the factors, don't ask me to remember which, indicated that there was definitely some allergy going on. Prescribed antibiotic/cortisone cream for the ear, and recommended permanently discontinuing fish in the diet.

After doing a bit of reading up on cat food allergies, I learned that it is generally the protein that the cat has the allergy to. Then I noticed that one of my favorite brands - Natural Balance - had a low-allergen food, that had no fish in it, but did have salmon oil. Well, ok, if it's the protein that is the allergen, then the oil could possibly be ok. I went to call the vet to ask if that reasoning was, well, reasonable. The vet. we saw yesterday about the food allergy was not available for the phone, and the vet tech taking my message told me that no, you can't give fish oil to a cat who is allergic to fish, even if all the cat is allergic to is the protein. But, she said, we should definitely try him on Hill's Prescription Z/D. I asked her to read the label, and pointed out that it has precious little actual meat, and that my cat doesn't do corn. In his younger days, Harvey had bouts of IBS, happily corrected by avoiding corn and wheat - and no way are we going back to that. She swore up hill and down that there was plenty of protein and no corn in it, well all except for the corn starch. I dunno, maybe in her country, corn starch is made from tree bark.

Then I checked out the Innova website, hoping to find that they had something less fishy I could try him on. Well, they have a large number of products, and it was too overwhelming to try to look at every single item. Everything I did look at, the ingredients included herring. So I emailed their customer service address, to ask if they had any canned cat foods without any fish in it, explained that I was asking because while I think their products are of excellent quality, my cat has that pesky fish allergy - and if they didn't, would they please consider developing such a product. Their prompt reply is that, yes, there are var Innova EVO canned 95% Meat has no fish in it, but does have fish oil, but that should not be a problem because cats are allergic to the protein, not the oil.

                  Huh.

So, do I trust the info. from a company I already believe in, whose reasoning is similar to what I was already thinking? Or do I trust some vet tech who doesn't comprehend that obligate carnivores need to eat meat, and has no clue what corn starch is?

Any one here have any experience, or insight into the matter?

I am finally going to be the owner of a cat! I am a first time owner, so I am a little stressed, worried, and confused. But overall excited. I'll probably ask a lot of questions about cats in due time, but for now:

What do you feed your cat? (Brand, wet or dry, etc.) How much do you feed them a day? And even if you are paying for them to have it, what do you think is the best food for cats to have?

I took my cat to the vet for a check up today, and because she's having some digestive issues. While I was there, the vet was letting everyone know that Nutro was recalling their dry food because of "production errors". I had just bought wet food Saturday morning and all the shelves were stocked with Nutro - wet and dry food. Isn't that deplorable? There was no recall notice at the store, but the recall was issued May 11, 2009. The vet is treating my cat's symptoms, but now I wonder if Nutro's wet food is the problem. My cats eat Nutro wet food, but they eat Royal Canin dry food. Do you feed your cats Nutro wet food, and have you noticed any changes with your cat's digestive health?
P.S.: Correction - the dry food recall was May 21, not 11.

He will take his paw and knock around inside his food bowl for a piece or two of food, and then slide it up and out of the bowl, and then go and eat the piece that fell out. What's up with this?

                              Best diet for Siamese Kitten?

Completely regardless of price, what is the very best food out there for a growing kitten? I am bringing home a Siamese this month and wondering what to feed-I would like him to have the best. I do work at a vet (receptionist) and so I am familiar with the theory that canned is preferable over dry for cats . . . . and at work we have a general list of the healthier varieties of cat foods. But lol it is a looong list, and also does not include the most recent diets added to the market, such as grain-free dry foods. (Orijen for example) Is grain-free nutrition good or bad for kittens? I have not heard anything either way. I have recently heard that it is beneficial to feed your cat a variety of a few different brands and so was considering alternating between some canned foods such as Natural Choice and Wellness, and some dry, either Wellness/Natural Choice kitten food or, if appropriate, some grain free foods like Orijen or Evo.
Also curious if the diet a kitten is fed makes a difference long-term in its intelligence-ie in its brain function?? Example: if a kitten were to grow up on the cheapest Wal-Mart brand generic catfood would that kitten not develop as fully as a kitten that was fed a very high-quality high nutrition kitten food?

Sorry for the detailed question, but I would appreciate any feedback!! As I mentioned I do work at a vet; I definitely trust our doctors when it comes to anything medical re my pets, but when it comes to specifics about nutrition it seems sometimes the best "expert" is not someone that studied a specific topic in school, but the people that have firsthand experience with it.

Thanks in advance for any info : )

When can we switch our kittens to indoor cat food?

We are paying a lot to buy weight management adult food for Raven who is about twice her size. She's lost 1 1/2 pounds in 1 year so the vet said that was incredibly good. Our two kittens who we got at 8 weeks may I believe (how old are they now..does anyone know?) still look like kittens. We don't know when to switch them to the indoor cat food for all of them. All three have wet food and no dry food. They get a treat a day (either a couple try treats 2-3 each or a chunk or two of a wet food but it's chunky not like pudding)

How old are my kittens and when should we switch all three over to indoor cat? Ravens about 18 pounds and the kittens are um..5 or 6 pounds I think. I don't remember. Thanks.
We got them early may. I thought I said that, my bad.

Raven is on weight management by the vet and the kittens are onscience diet kitten food.

                                  Dry Cat Food Resources

I've tried mixing some of his dry food in with the wet and he just picks them out. I brought a box of 12 because they didn't sell any single packets to try but there was only 3 boxes left so i though cats must like this seeing as people are buying it, i also brought tesco finest cat food which i new he liked, i've given him that today and i looked in the ingredients and it has the same ingredients in the tesco luxury cat food pouches as in the Tesco finest cat food. The only difference being 49% meat in the luxury and 55% in the finest cat food. also there in sunflower oil in the finest cat food which isn't stated in the luxury.

Are there any other ways of tempting him to eat it. Hes very fussy with his wet food and seems to eat the cheaper ones, only i've noticed they list "various sugars" in the cheaper cat food. In my opinion sugar doesn't need to be in cat food.

Also the ingredients are the same in the luxury cat food that's in HiLife cat food which is the best wet food in the uk and quite costly, especially if the cat in on a wet diet only. My cat won't eat theirs (HiLife pouches) either.

I'm just fed up with giving my sister cat food because mine wont eat it (he does very well out of me). I don't like giving him the food he has been having because of the low protein and the various sugars listed in the ingredients. Plus he licks all the gravy off then eats some of the meat and depending how he feels or what flavor it is he might go back. He really enjoys the Tesco finest food but its to expensive to keep buying.

Are there any ways i can get him to eat it or should i just give up and admit defeat and give the box my sister (again!). I'm not a cat or anything but the food does smell quite nice (smells meaty) compared to allot of cat foods so i just don't understand him.

I have a 3 year old spayed female cat that tucks into her dry food like she's never going to get anymore and then brings the whole lot back up (undigested) minutes later? Does doesn't always do it but it does happen quite often, apart from that she shows no signs of being poorly. PS it doesn't happen with meat only dry food.

What kind of dry food should I get for my cat?

I'd like to start feeding my cat a healthier dry food, but not sure what to get. I have been feeding her 9 Lives, but I'd like to switch to something with less fillers and preservatives. However, I don't have a big budget, and can't afford the really expensive stuff. Any suggestions for a good dry food that is healthier but won't cost an arm and a leg? She is an indoor cat, about 4 years old, if that matters.
